Bernhard Pick | Biography

Bernhard Pick (Kempen, Prussia, 19 December, 1842 – 1917), was a German-American Lutheran pastor and a fine Hebrew and rabbinical scholar. He believed, like other scholars (Joseph Klausner), that the Talmud gives insight into Jesus as a historical individual.

He completed his theological course in Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1968. In that year he was ordained to the ministry in the Presbyterian church, but in 1884 he was received by the Lutheran ministerium of Pennsylvania as a member of that denomination.

He has been successively pastor of congregations at New York in 1868, North Buffalo, New York, in 1869, Syracuse in 1870-’4, Rochester in 1874-’81, and at Alleghany, Pennsylvania, since 1881.

As a scholar he contributed many articles to the Schaff-Herzog Encyclopaedia of Religious Knowledge and McClintock and James Strong’s Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature. He was a frequent contributor to various theological reviews, both in the USA and in Europe. He also provided the index to Johann Peter Lange’s Commentary on the Old Testament (New York, 1882) and an “Index to the Ante-Nicene Fathers” (1887). Pick’s interest in hymnology led to Luther as a Hymnist Philadelphia, 1875; “Juedisches Volksleben zur Zeit Jesus” (Rochester, New York, 1880); and an edition of Luther’s Ein feste Burg in 19 Languages 1880; enlarged in 21 languages, Chicago, 1883.

Other works: a translation from the German of Franz Delitzsch’s “Jewish Artisan Life in the Time of Jesus” (1883); “Historical Sketch of the Jews since the Destruction of Jerusalem” (1887); “Life of Christ according to Extra-Canonical Sources” (1887); and “The Talmud: what it is and what it says about Jesus and the Christians” (1887).

Many of Pick’s works are now being reissued with 21st Century publication dates. Among these are:

  • Paralipomena – Remains of Gospels and Sayings of Christ 1908 – including a chapter – The Gospel to the Hebrews.
  • The Cabala: Its Influence on Judaism and Christianity 1913.
  • The Apocryphal Acts of Paul, Peter, John, Andrew and Thomas.

[Pick is a Jewish family name, and I assume this author is Jewish, but I need more information on him, if you could provide a link.]
